As this course draws to ta close, I reflect on my hope and goals as I continue to work with children and families from diverse backgrounds. My fervent hope is that I continue to provide an environment where they can come and feel safe and with my knowledge give an unbiased voice of reasoning, a listening ear and a supporter of their needs. I am constantly reminded that in providing accurate, authentic information about the differences among children - beliefs, attitudes, values and customs - that one encounters in the classroom every day is important to the process of exploring diversity with children.
Thank you for your continued support, I greatly admire and respect everyone's opinion each week. I wish you the best in your continued studies at Walden. Continue to strive to be the beacon of hope, change in your community and nation. This course only goes to show that we can do more, there is work to be done in the field that we know has its challenges and greatest rewards.
I agree that authentic and accurate discussion around differences is essential to helping children learn to appreciate and respect diversity. I believe your unbiased voice of reasoning and the safe environment you provide will be an excellent place for children to learn and grow. I look forward to working with you more in the future!

Putting books that are more diverse in the library is a great goal. Every child should be introduced and read stories from all over the world. This will help show them diversity and how different cultures write.

ReplyDeleteI know that we as early childhood educators will have many different goals to achieve in this profession. However, the goal you have mentioned is an excellent one which you have to work towards. Even though you cannot obtain books for every race, you can get photos and post them on the walls in the library, or in the classroom, so that children can observe.

ReplyDeleteYour goal of expanding your class library to include more books that share representations of different culture is an excellent one. Stories are a great way to share different cultural expressions, particularly when they include characters that are children.
